Part of over 600 years of paper making history
Magnani Mill was established in the small town of Pescia, near Florence, in 1404. It has been in operation every since, making it the longest continuous paper mill in the modern world.
The paper mills of Pescia are among the oldest in the world, dating back to the 13th Century. The abundance of clear water in the region made it perfect for the establishment of falling mills.
Paper manufacturing and printing all flourished in this area, not surprisingly, leading up to and during the heart of the Enlightenment years.
The Magnani family dates back to the early 13th Century. They originated in Emilia and travelled from one town to another, passing down the art of beautiful paper manufacturing from father to son.
They established their paper mills at Pescia in 1404. It was originally called ‘Gusdchiera’ (the falling mill) and changed its name to ‘Le Carte’ (the papers).
The Magnani family built up an impressive enterprise, moving into exports by the mid 18th Century. They began selling their fine paper to markets that had previously bought from Spanish and English manufacturers. The reputation of the Magnani paper mills and the quality of their product was cemented at the 1866 London Exhibition.
It is traditional within the Magnani family to favour limited, high-quality production over mass production and quick profits. The highest standards of paper perfection, the needs of their customers and an unwavering commitment to quality are the drivers behind this centuries old business.
